John Malkovich says Oscar campaigns now help bring people to cinemas

John Malkovich said at the London Film Festival that Oscar campaigns have changed greatly since his last nomination more than 30 years ago.

He said the months of campaigning before the ceremony now seem to be the only way to get people to go to cinemas.

Malkovich has been tipped for a best actor award for “Wild Horse Nine,” a comedy noir directed by Martin McDonagh.

He plays a veteran CIA agent alongside Sam Rockwell in a story set around the 1973 Chilean coup.

The film premiered in Venice in September, where Malkovich won the best actor award, and screened in London on Friday.

Malkovich has previously received two Oscar nominations, both for best supporting actor.

He said he now takes the campaign process at a distance and believes people must adapt as things change.
