Pope names Monsignor Viola to lead St Peter’s Basilica

Viola will lead St Peter’s Basilica and take on two other Vatican roles.

He replaces Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, who left after being appointed bishop of Chieti-Vasto.

Viola was previously secretary of the Vatican department responsible for worship and the sacraments.

These roles put him in charge of important work at the basilica and in Vatican City.
