Housing debate shapes Spain’s election campaign as polls favor the right

Spain’s political parties are moving toward an election, and housing has become a major campaign issue.

The shift followed the eviction of Maricarmen Abascal, which drew attention to the difficulty of accessing housing.

Before that, the defeat of government housing decrees in Congress had highlighted a setback for Pedro Sánchez’s government.

Poll averages cited in the article put the conservative People’s Party (PP) at 32.5% and Vox at 18%, while the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) is near 27%.

The left is split, with Sumar or Frente Amplio at 6% and Podemos at 3% in those averages.

One projection based on those figures gives the PP and Vox about 200 seats, while a separate estimate using CIS polling data puts the conservative bloc at 185 seats.

The analysis says the left may have around one million potential voters who have not yet been counted as likely voters, and that mobilizing them could affect its chances of governing.
