Germany’s EUDI wallet plans include health care, but key questions remain
Germany is developing d-you, a state-backed digital wallet planned to launch on 2 January 2027.
It is intended to let people set up a digital identity and store digital documents, with about 50 partners expected at launch.
Health care is considering how the wallet could be used to access services such as electronic patient records and e-prescriptions.
But it is not yet clear what security rules would apply when the wallet is used for those services.
Experts have also questioned the wallet’s reliance on a central cloud security component and raised concerns about older smartphones.
The wallet is designed to let users share only selected information, but experts say this does not settle whether a service’s requested data is necessary for its purpose.
The development team says it has published the code for the apps and backend, while keeping a security component’s code private for licensing and security reasons.
Germany’s planned state digital identity wallet is expected to launch on 2 January 2027, but questions remain about its security and use for health data.
The wallet, called d-you, is intended to let users store digital identity documents and other proofs.
Health-sector participants are considering whether it could provide access to electronic patient records and e-prescriptions.
Experts have raised concerns about the wallet’s central cloud security component and the use of outdated smartphones.
The draft law does not specify detailed operating rules for that central component, unlike rules for health-sector identity providers.
