Petition to restrict police weapons at student protests passes 100,000 signatures
A petition calling for limits on police weapons and restraint techniques at high school protests has passed 100,000 signatures on the French National Assembly website.
It was started by Raphaël Pradeau, a teacher and member of the group Attac.
The petition says the police response to student protests has been disproportionate and asks lawmakers to ban several weapons and potentially dangerous restraint methods at these events.
The call comes after a 15-year-old student in Lens, in northern France, lost a hand when a stun grenade exploded on Monday.
France’s interior minister has suspended the use of a particular type of stun grenade at high school protests while an investigation into the incident is under way.
The suspension applies only to high school protests.
At 500,000 signatures from people in at least 30 departments, the petition could be debated in the National Assembly if its group leaders agree.
