Lescure says he hopes to avoid using orders to pass France’s 2027 budget

Lescure says he hopes to avoid using orders to pass France’s 2027 budget

France’s economy minister, Roland Lescure, says he would prefer parliament to pass the 2027 budget through a vote.

He wants the budget deficit to be no more than 5%, which he says is important as France’s debt concerns markets.

Deputies rejected the budget’s revenue section in committee, but the proposal returns to the National Assembly on Tuesday in its original form.

The committee’s changes would have increased the deficit by more than 8 billion euros, Lescure said.

The government has no majority in the Assembly, making it harder to pass the budget through a regular vote.

Another option is to use a constitutional procedure that can pass a bill without a vote, or to adopt the budget by executive orders if parliament reaches a deadlock.

Lescure says he hopes debate will continue and that changes are possible as long as the deficit stays at 5% or lower.
