Glucksmann wins France’s centre-left presidential primary
Raphaël Glucksmann, a member of the European Parliament and founder of the Place Publique movement, has won France’s centre-left presidential primary.
He received more than 66% of the vote, while Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure came second with about 14%.
Just over 120,000 people voted in the primary, organized by the Socialists and their centre-left allies.
Glucksmann is now the candidate backed by those parties for the presidential election.
The French left is divided, and Glucksmann opposes an alliance with hard-left leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon.
He says he wants to challenge both President Emmanuel Macron’s political approach and the far right, led by Marine Le Pen.
Faure and Ségolène Royal have said they will support the winner, and Glucksmann’s campaign now begins.
