Police face fireworks and stone attacks at illegal party in Zurich

An illegal party took place overnight at Hardplatz in Zurich, Switzerland.

Police learned about it shortly after 11 p.m.

and initially allowed it to continue.

They later moved to end it after reports of damage to buildings and vehicles and disturbance to residents.

More than 100 people were gathered in a barricaded underpass and at the square, and police say some threw stones and glass bottles.

Officers were also attacked with fireworks and stones; police used irritant, water cannon and rubber bullets.

About 24 rubbish containers were set on fire, one officer was injured and several police vehicles were badly damaged.

Police brought the situation under control at about 3 a.m., and the total cost of the damage is not yet known.
