Ben Affleck’s Animals echoes Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low

In Animals, a lawyer running for mayor must respond when a child is kidnapped and a ransom is demanded.

The plot closely resembles Akira Kurosawa’s film High and Low.

Affleck said he had never seen that film.

The story also connects the crime to social class and the costs of political ambition.
