Aboriginal community leader jailed for abusing four children had sentence reduced

Jeffrey Alan Brown, a prominent Aboriginal community leader in Port Hedland, Western Australia, was convicted of 13 child sex offences against four children.

The offences took place over six years, when the children were aged 10 to 14 and were under his care, supervision or authority.

Brown was sentenced in 2024 to 10 and a half years in prison, a term equal to the maximum penalty for one of the offences.

Judge Gary Massey said Brown had shown no remorse because he denied the offences.

The judge also considered Brown’s standing in the community, his efforts to keep his culture alive and his past role as his wife’s full-time carer when deciding the sentence.

He said the punishment had to reflect the seriousness of the abuse but should not destroy Brown’s chance of a useful life after release.

Brown is serving his sentence at Roebourne prison.
