One civilian killed and a civil servant badly hurt in Yahukimo attacks

Two attacks in Dekai, Yahukimo, in Indonesia’s Papua Highlands, left one person dead and another badly injured.

The attacks happened on October 11 and 12.

The person who died was a 46-year-old civilian unloading groceries from a truck when he was attacked; he later died at a hospital.

The second victim, a 51-year-old civil servant, was attacked while sweeping outside a home and suffered injuries to his wrist and back.

Authorities suspect the armed group known as Kodap XVI Yahukimo, led by Kopitua Heluka, was involved.

An official said the civilian was not a member of the military’s intelligence service, but a resident who worked in Dekai.

Police and the Damai Cartenz operation are investigating who was involved and say the case will be handled under the law.
