KPU says draft rule on presidential candidates was shared with lawmakers

Indonesia’s election commission says a disputed rule was included in draft election regulations discussed with lawmakers in 2023.

The rule says a presidential or vice-presidential candidate with proof of university graduation does not need to show proof of finishing high school abroad.

A former head of parliament’s Commission II says he does not recall seeing the provision in the drafts.

The disagreement matters because the rule has drawn scrutiny over whether it was added without proper discussion.
