Jean Gabin resented criticism from French New Wave filmmakers

Jean Gabin was a major French film star, but some New Wave critics said his acting was too traditional.

Jean-Paul Belmondo said Gabin took their criticism personally.

Gabin was willing to try a different kind of film if he got an interesting role.

Belmondo recalled that Truffaut may have considered working with him, but it never happened.
