Road repairs in Ulan-Ude linked to fewer windshield replacements

Road repairs in Ulan-Ude, a city in Russia’s Buryatia region, have made driving more comfortable, according to local drivers.

One resident says stones and road debris used to hit his Toyota Corolla’s windshield regularly when he drove toward the settlement of Silikatny.

He has not needed to replace the windshield for more than 10 years and links that change to better roads.

Damaged pavement can break into loose stones and asphalt pieces, which traffic—especially heavy trucks—can throw at nearby cars.

The city says more than 150 road sections have been repaired since 2017, and about 85% of its main roads were in standard condition by 2025.

There is no direct data showing how much windshield damage has fallen, but local listings show relatively few specialist glass-replacement services.

The city’s road fund provides about 6.9 billion rubles for road infrastructure in 2026, including nearly 6.5 billion rubles for improving roads and related structures.
