US pledges cooperation in Okinawa murder investigation

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has pledged that the United States will cooperate with Japanese authorities investigating the death of a woman in Okinawa.

Local police say US Marine Devin Jacob Ballard was arrested on October 4 on suspicion of robbing and murdering 39-year-old Anna Yagi in a hotel in Naha, Okinawa’s capital.

Ballard has denied the allegations.

The case has prompted protests and renewed criticism of the US military presence in Japan.

Japan hosts the largest overseas contingent of US forces, and most of its 18,000 Marines are stationed on Okinawa.

US personnel on the island have been given a month-long curfew, banned from drinking alcohol and required to take discipline training.

The investigation is ongoing, and the US says it will work with Japan and local authorities.
