Two men die as festival floats overturn in Osaka Prefecture

Two men died and 16 others were injured on Saturday when festival floats overturned in Osaka Prefecture, Japan.

In Izumisano, a 51-year-old man died after being trapped beneath a float, and seven others were injured.

In Izumiotsu, a 48-year-old man died and nine others were injured.

Both floats overturned as they were being steered around corners.

The floats, called danjiri, are pulled through city streets by people during annual festivals that began as prayers for a good harvest.

A fast turn without stopping, known as yarimawashi, is a highlight of the parades and can be dangerous.

On October 3, another float overturned in Sakai, injuring 11 people.
