ASX 200 rises 0.76% as banks and miners lead gains

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 share index rose 0.76% on Monday, extending its gains over two sessions to about 1.40%.

The index finished just below a one-month high.

Banks and mining companies led the rise, while technology and healthcare stocks also gained.

BHP rose about 2.5%, and major banks including Westpac, NAB and ANZ also advanced.

Copper prices moved close to their September record, while Australian bond yields eased from recent highs.

Smaller companies did not share as much in the gains: the Small Ordinaries index rose about 0.3%, while the Emerging Companies Index fell.

MAAS Group shares dropped again after the collapse of Firmus’ planned $44 billion sharemarket listing prompted broker downgrades, although MAAS said its Firmus-related work remained on track.
