Glucksmann wins left-wing primary but faces a divided camp
Raphaël Glucksmann, leader of Place publique and now the Socialist Party’s presidential candidate, won the first round of the left-wing primary on 11 October.
He received 66.17% of the vote, while Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure received 14.46%.
The result makes Glucksmann the candidate, but the left remains divided.
He needs to bring former rivals and critical socialists into his campaign.
He also wants to open talks with the Ecologists, whose members will decide their party’s presidential strategy in December.
The Communists are campaigning separately with Fabien Roussel, and the Ecologists are also divided over whether to move closer to Jean-Luc Mélenchon.
Whether Glucksmann can unite these parties and groups will shape his effort to stay in the presidential race.
Raphaël Glucksmann won the first round of the left-wing primary on 11 October 2026 with 66.17% of the vote.
The Place publique leader, who is now also backed by the Socialist Party, must try to unite a divided left-wing camp.
Some Socialists who criticised him during the primary may offer limited support.
The Greens remain divided over whether to engage with Glucksmann or move closer to Jean-Luc Mélenchon.
Green Party members are due to decide the party’s presidential strategy in December.
