French lawmakers back state compensation for fire-related social contribution breaks
A French National Assembly committee voted unanimously to require the state to reimburse Social Security for temporary contribution breaks granted during summer fires.
The breaks helped businesses and self-employed workers in towns evacuated or confined during fires in Gironde, Landes and Var.
The vote came during committee debates on France’s 2027 Social Security budget.
The debate reflects a wider dispute over contribution exemptions and their effect on the system’s deficit.
The committee also backed taxing apprentices’ pay under new contracts starting on January 1, 2027.
It is due to examine a measure to reduce exemptions on the largest employment termination payments, then a plan to simplify general company exemptions, expected to bring in 3.7 billion euros.
The committee is scheduled to resume debates Tuesday evening, with a public debate on the budget set to begin October 20.

What people are saying
I may surprise you, but I totally agree with you in this fight so that the state does not leave Social Security to bear the cost of the aid it grants.
We fought this battle last year to obtain compensation by the state for all social contribution exemptions; that is not so we can turn back today.
We are in a situation where people are increasingly giving up on care, where poverty and social inequality are worsening very sharply. And meanwhile, we continue with gifts in the form of social contribution exemptions for businesses.
