Michoacán schools to restrict students’ phone use from November 3

Mexico’s education secretary, Mario Delgado, met with school communities in Michoacán to explain new rules for digital devices in basic education schools.

The rules are due to take effect on November 3 in public and private schools.

They are intended to keep students from using phones during lessons while allowing families to contact their children when needed.

Officials say excessive phone use can affect concentration and reading, encourage isolation, and expose students to bullying and online violence.

The measures also encourage students to use break times to interact with one another.

They are part of a broader effort to make schools safer and promote responsible technology use, with teachers and families involved in applying the rules.

Delgado also said President Claudia Sheinbaum presented a decree requiring digital platforms to remove certain harmful content, including material linked to abuse, violence, bullying and self-harm.

The decree is scheduled to be published in Mexico’s official gazette on October 14.
