Sri Lanka has no immediate plan to help 19 Iranian ships facing shortages

Nineteen Iranian ships are anchored in international waters about 24 nautical miles off Sri Lanka’s coast.

They have reported shortages of food, water and fuel.

Sri Lanka says it has no immediate plan to help them and will put its national interest first when considering any assistance.

Officials say companies supplying the ships are aware they could face secondary U.S. sanctions, but Sri Lanka says it has received no U.S. warning about helping.

The ships are described by Sri Lanka’s foreign minister as oil tankers that have been stranded for several months after the United States resumed a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

Sri Lanka is weighing the issue while recovering from an economic crisis and maintaining important trade ties with both the United States and Iran.

No further action or decision by Sri Lanka is specified.
