Flood in central Nepal leaves five people missing and sweeps away homes

A landslide blocked the Budhi Gandaki River in Gorkha district in central Nepal, causing a flash flood downstream.

The flood swept away about a dozen houses and two suspension bridges, damaged a hydroelectric project camp and washed away a highway bridge.

Five people—two women and three men—are missing, and officials reported no deaths at the time of the reports.

Rescue teams have reached the area, and reports give different totals for the number of people rescued.

Authorities have told villagers along the river in several districts to move to safer places.

The Budhi Gandaki flows into the Trishuli River system, which was hit by a catastrophic flood in August that killed 1,457 people, with thousands still missing.

Officials are monitoring the situation and continuing rescue and evacuation efforts.
