Piastri finishes fifth after puncture sets up late pass on Hamilton

Oscar Piastri finished fifth for McLaren at the Singapore Grand Prix, held at Marina Bay.

A slow puncture forced him to make an extra tyre stop and disrupted his race.

The stop left him with a tyre advantage late in the race, and he passed Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton in the closing laps.

Piastri said fifth was the best result he could have achieved with the car’s pace.

McLaren teammate Lando Norris finished fourth, giving the team a double-points finish after the pair collided in Saturday’s Sprint Race.

Piastri said McLaren is not currently fast enough to fight for wins or podiums against Red Bull and Mercedes.

The team now has work to do before the next race, the United States Grand Prix.

The puncture was a shame, but I think fifth place was the maximum we could have done today.

Obviously, the puncture was a bit of a shame, but ironically I think it actually helped me get Lewis at the end, so it was a silver lining.

A bit of excitement which was good, because otherwise it was a pretty lonely race.
