The DARCYS honour disability representation in film and television

The first Easterseals Disability Arts & Culture Awards, known as The DARCYS, took place in Santa Monica on Saturday.

The awards recognise work that represents disability authentically in film, television and other media.

Winners included HBO Max drama “The Pitt,” feature film “Horsegirls” and documentary “The Haunting of Pennhurst.”

Anna Sargent won for her performance in “Bugonia.”

The awards were previously known as the Media Access Awards, which began in 1979.

Committees of filmmakers, critics, past honourees and industry and nonprofit representatives chose the nominees and winners, and most committee members were people with disabilities.

The awards aim to support greater disability inclusion both on screen and behind the scenes.
