Hurricane Simon brings extreme rain and dangerous waves to Mexico’s Pacific coast

Category 4 Hurricane Simon was moving close to Mexico’s Pacific coast on Sunday, October 11.

At 6 a.m., its centre was 95 kilometres west of Manzanillo, Colima, and 175 kilometres south-southeast of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco.

Jalisco was forecast to face the heaviest rain, with more than 250 millimetres possible in some areas, while Colima and Nayarit were also expected to get heavy rain.

The storm could bring winds of up to 230 kilometres per hour along Jalisco’s coast and waves as high as 10 metres there.

Heavy rain may cause floods, rivers to overflow and landslides, while storm tides could raise coastal flooding risks in Jalisco and Colima.

The storm’s effects were also expected in Sinaloa and Michoacán, with rain, strong winds and high waves.

Mexico’s weather service and the US National Hurricane Center had a hurricane-wind warning area in place from Michoacán to Nayarit as Simon was forecast to move close to Jalisco’s coast during the day.
