Swiss initiative to exempt solar installations from permits fails
A national popular initiative in Switzerland to make many solar installations exempt from building permits has failed.
The proposal would have covered installations on buildings and other structures, including in protected areas.
It allowed exceptions for sites of national or cantonal cultural importance and historic sites, where permits could still carry conditions.
The initiative needed 100,000 signatures within 18 months, but the deadline passed on October 8, 2026, without enough valid signatures being submitted.
Organisers said 117,500 people had signed, but checks found nearly 20,000 signatures were invalid.
One of the initiative’s organisers said a lawyer was investigating why so many signatures had been rejected.
