Swiss lawmaker raises the idea of an alcohol ban at train stations

Germany is set to ban drinking alcohol at all its train stations from Thursday, following a violent attack on a security worker by a passenger believed to have been drunk.

Swiss lawmaker Stefan Müller-Altermatt has asked whether Switzerland should introduce a similar ban or create alcohol-free zones at stations with more problems.

He says some SBB staff told him a ban could help them deal with repeat troublemakers.

The SBB says it prefers clear rules, staff presence and targeted action rather than a blanket ban.

Excessive drinking and staying at a station while visibly drunk are already prohibited, and alcohol sales stop after 10pm.

Several Swiss lawmakers are sceptical, saying a general ban may not be effective or that Switzerland has fewer problems than Germany.

The Swiss government’s response to Müller-Altermatt’s question is still awaited.
