Laika’s Wildwood Follows a Girl Into a Dangerous Fantasy World

Wildwood is a stop-motion fantasy film from Laika, the studio behind Coraline and ParaNorman.

Directed by Travis Knight, it is based on a novel by Colin Meloy, with illustrations by Carson Ellis.

The story follows Prue, a girl in Portland, Oregon, whose infant brother Mac is carried away by crows.

She enters the Impassable Wilderness to find him, with a local boy named Curtis joining her.

In the strange world, Prue meets animal people and learns about its history as she builds a revolution.

Curtis is captured by the Dowager Governess, who tries to draw him toward power and violence.

The film runs for more than two hours and uses intricate stop-motion animation, a painstaking technique in which objects are moved slightly between photographs.

The review describes Wildwood as Laika’s most ambitious film and praises its scale and craftsmanship.
