Riyadh signs contracts for 94 new metro trains
Riyadh has signed contracts to buy 94 new trains for its public transport network.
The additions will expand the metro fleet from 183 trains to 277.
The city says population and economic growth are driving up daily travel for work, study and other needs.
Riyadh’s public transport network has recorded about 500 million users since it began operating, including more than 300 million metro passengers.
The new trains are intended to increase capacity on busy routes: the Blue line is set to handle 530,000 passengers a day, the Red line 370,000 and the Yellow line 288,000.
The figures are planned capacity, not passenger counts.
The city is also developing roads and traffic management as part of its wider transport plans; no delivery schedule for the trains was given.
