Ukrainian experts urge protection of former reservoir bed instead of rebuilding dam

The Nova Kakhovka dam was destroyed in June 2023, draining the reservoir and causing severe flooding.

Since then, the exposed land has become wetlands and grassland, revealing archaeological remains.

Ukrainian experts and more than 100 NGOs want the area protected as a Unesco world heritage site.

They say rebuilding the dam would undo the changes, though a rebuilt reservoir could support irrigation in southern Ukraine.
