Milan mayoral candidate depicts himself as a Black Italian Obama
Salvatore Varano, an accountant from Calabria, says he is running for mayor of Milan with a civic project called Orgoglio Milano.
He shared an AI-generated image showing himself with dark skin and called himself “the Italian Obama.”
Varano said the image was a joke and a way to reflect on how society and politics are changing.
He has also promoted about 30 local committees for Futuro Nazionale, a party founded by Roberto Vannacci, though his current party ties are unclear.
In June, Varano was sentenced to five years in prison in a first-instance ruling over false invoicing, in a case involving alleged illegal transfers of 85 million euros to China.
A separate investigation linked to his 2021 mayoral campaign was later archived.
Varano says that, for now, he is only running to become “the Milanese Obama of the cartoon,” and that what comes next remains to be seen.
