Italy’s governing right-wing coalition divided over Milan and budget plans
Italy’s governing centre-right coalition is facing disagreements over both the next mayoral candidate for Milan and the national budget.
Forza Italia leader Antonio Tajani supports Matteo Perego di Cremnago for mayor, while the League backs its deputy leader, Silvia Sardone.
The League has objected that Forza Italia promoted Perego without first discussing the choice with its coalition partners.
The two parties also disagree over whether banks and insurers should face a tax on extra profits.
Tajani rejects such a tax and has instead proposed tax relief for young people, lower-paid workers and pensioners.
The government says it has limited room for new spending in 2027, with €14.4 billion in extra deficit spending agreed with the EU for energy and defence.
Coalition leaders are expected to meet to address the disputes, and the government’s budget bill must be approved by the cabinet by October 20.

If Forza Italia did not want to divide us, then why put Perego on all the newspapers and television news without any prior dialogue with the coalition?
Someone has to explain to me what an excess profit is. Who decides what is extra?
