Puglia olive oil producers plan protest over sector crisis
Olive growers, cooperatives and olive mills from across Puglia plan to gather outside the prefecture in Bari on October 12.
The protest is organized by Orgoglio Olivicolo and Confagricoltura Bari-Bat.
The organizers say the crisis puts 16,000 businesses and more than 30,000 jobs at risk.
They have drawn up a 10-point plan and will give it to the prefect, the government’s local representative.
Their main demands include official recognition of the crisis, immediate support, stronger checks against fraud, and measures to support olive oil prices and mills.
They say the sector is important to employment and income across the region.
A meeting with industry representatives and the Italian Banking Association is also scheduled at the regional agriculture department, where access to credit for businesses and mills will be discussed.
