China starts building power plant using molten salt and supercritical CO2

China has begun building the Ruitan power project in Yantai, in eastern China’s Shandong province.

It is at a coal-fired power station and is described as the world’s first utility-scale plant to combine supercritical carbon dioxide power generation with large-scale molten salt energy storage.

The two technologies are meant to work together.

Electricity made when demand is low can be stored using molten salt.

The project aims to reduce wasted energy and help make the electrical grid more stable.

It is intended to demonstrate whether combining the technologies can deliver those benefits.

Construction is under way, but no completion date is given.
