Google study finds custom patches can make open-source updates harder

Google studied the engineering work needed to update open-source software packages used inside the company.

It tracked 54 package updates from April to December 2024, and most took four hours or less.

The median effort was 2.2 hours, but the average was 13.9 hours because some updates took much longer.

Among packages with usable patch data, those with company-specific changes had three times the median update effort of packages without such changes.

Engineers may need to adapt those changes to a new version and fix problems in software that depends on the package.

One update was estimated to take 400 hours, with repair work accounting for much of the time on updates lasting more than two days.

The results reflect a small share of Google’s updates and a setup where most packages studied were written in Go, so they may not apply to every organization.
