Clémentine Autain criticises police response and questions funding for violence law

Clémentine Autain, a lawmaker in France’s National Assembly, criticised the government and police over their handling of student protests.

She said the police response was not proportionate and argued that investigations into police conduct should be independent of the police.

She also questioned whether a bill to address sexist and sexual violence would have enough money to carry out its measures.

The government had cited billions of euros for tackling violence, but Autain said those sums were already part of existing budgets.

She argued that a broader framework law, with planned funding, would be stronger than the current bill.

The National Assembly is due to vote on the bill on Tuesday, October 13.

Autain pointed to Spain’s approach as an example, saying it had helped reduce killings of women and end impunity for sexual violence.
