São Paulo window-theater show ends Minhocão run after 101 performances
Grupo Esparrama is ending its window-theater show at the Minhocão, an elevated road in central São Paulo.
The final free performance is scheduled for Oct.
12 at 4 p.m.
A tree has grown enough to block the view of the stage, which was set on a building’s window ledge.
The group chose not to cut the tree or seek permission to prune it.
Since 2013, the show has had 101 performances and drawn more than 25,000 people who watched from the road.
The project grew from a chance moment when performers appeared at the window and passersby stopped to watch.
The show helped people imagine the elevated road as a place for public life, and it received a local heritage recognition in 2021.
The group has also performed at other venues and is preparing shows in public squares.

This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
We do not want theater to be a barrier to what is happening in the city
Instead of pruning it or trying to find a solution to restore the view, we chose to let it follow its course
The first moment, which was truly accidental and unusual, happened when the clowns stopped to get some air at the window and realized that their presence alone created a sense of wonder that invited people to stop in front of our window
This elevated highway is a structure that did violence to downtown São Paulo and has been reinterpreted for decades since the population began occupying it as if it were their own backyard
