Delhi Police files cases over INDIA bloc protest
Delhi Police has filed multiple cases linked to an INDIA bloc protest in New Delhi on Monday.
Police say the cases concern alleged damage to barricades and graffiti on roads.
Opposition leaders and supporters, led by Rahul Gandhi, marched along Barakhamba Road towards the Supreme Court.
The protest was against alleged irregularities in the Election Commission’s revision of electoral rolls, known as the Special Intensive Revision, or SIR.
Eleven opposition leaders later filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Election Commission’s decisions on the process.
The Supreme Court Registry has flagged 14 defects in the petition and asked why three election commissioners were named as respondents.
The petitioners seek scrutiny of how the Election Commission made and carried out decisions about the revision.
Delhi Police has also asked to extend the deployment of central security forces in the city until October 20, citing the possibility of further protests.
