Mexico marks National Cacti Day amid calls to protect its plant diversity

Mexico marks National Cacti Day on October 10, a day established by the country’s Senate.

Mexico is home to the world’s greatest diversity of cacti, though official figures differ: one count lists 913 taxa, while others put the number near 700 species.

About 85% of Mexican cacti are found naturally nowhere else.

Cacti grow not only in deserts and dry scrublands, but also in jungles, coastal dunes and other habitats.

Some have leaves, and some have few or no visible spines; areoles are the distinctive structures that identify them as cacti.

These plants provide food and shelter for insects, birds and small mammals, and they also have a long cultural role in Mexico, including through the use of nopales as food.

Habitat loss and illegal collection threaten some species, and the day is also a call to document and protect them.
