Flood in Nepal’s Gorkha district sweeps away homes and bridges
Floodwaters swept through Nepal’s central Gorkha district on Sunday, carrying away about a dozen houses and several suspension bridges.
The flood hit the Budhi Gandaki River, a tributary of the Trishuli, and damaged part of a hydropower project.
Around 50 people were rescued, while five people are missing; no deaths have been reported.
The river rose sharply, reaching nearly 8.5 metres at one location within a couple of hours.
The cause is not yet clear: possible explanations include a landslide blocking the river or an ice avalanche upstream.
