Sheinbaum plans social media rules to protect children and teens
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum plans to hold a livestream next week with children and teenagers on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook.
She says she wants to hear their views in a safe setting.
The announcement follows an attack at a secondary school in Torreón, Coahuila.
Sheinbaum has proposed rules to stop platforms from showing young users content involving hate, sexual abuse, school violence, cyberbullying and other harmful material.
The plan also calls for platforms to remove accounts or content that promote violence, sort content by age and provide tools to report it.
Sheinbaum says young people should have privacy and safety settings active by default, and can get psychological support through Mexico’s Línea de la Vida helpline.
She plans to speak with social media companies and says the decree is due to be published next week in Mexico’s Official Gazette.
