Tolkien condemned an abandoned 1950s animated adaptation of The Lord of the Rings
A first animated film of The Lord of the Rings was proposed in the late 1950s, soon after J. R. R. Tolkien’s books were published.
Publisher Forrest J. Ackerman secured Tolkien’s approval for the project, and screenwriter Morton Grady Zimmerman took charge.
The plan was to tell the story of Frodo and the Fellowship in a three-hour animated film.
Tolkien said the screenplay misunderstood and strayed from his books, criticizing its treatment of characters and scenes.
He also objected to orcs with swords and feathers, a talking Balrog, and elves portrayed as tiny fairy creatures.
The project was eventually abandoned, and Tolkien’s view of Peter Jackson’s later films is unknown because he died before they were made.

What people are saying
Morton Grady Zimmerman is incapable of grasping or adapting the book’s narrative dimension.
He merely skimmed The Lord of the Rings and then wrote the screenplay from partially confused memories, referring very little to the original text.
I am very displeased by Zimmerman’s extreme stupidity and incompetence, as well as his total disregard for the original work.
