French horror film Vermines uses spiders to explore fear and prejudice

Vermines, a French horror film by Sébastien Vaniček, was shown for the first time on France 2 on 11 October 2026.

It is set in an apartment building in Noisy-le-Grand, where Kaleb, who collects exotic animals, accidentally lets a venomous spider escape.

The residents then struggle to survive as the spiders spread through the building.

The film uses spiders as a metaphor for people who are feared and rejected because of how they look or where they come from.

Its message is not to portray spiders as monsters, but to question intolerance and encourage respect for animals.

Arachnologist Christine Rollard says spiders are mostly harmless to people.

The film was made with real spiders, and the director said their welfare was carefully protected during filming.
