17-year-old Ontario runner finishes Finlayson Arm 50-mile race

Alex Muresan, 17, finished an 82-kilometre race at the Finlayson Arm 50 Mile on Vancouver Island in September, in 16:27:34.

The course starts near Victoria and climbs almost 4,000 metres on coastal mountain trails, making it a demanding test of endurance.

Muresan, who is from Mississauga, Ontario, started running consistently just over a year ago and had already completed a marathon and a 50-kilometre ultra.

He prepared while attending high school and working two jobs, training on steep trails in Squamish, British Columbia, during the summer.

At the race, he settled into his own pace and took time at aid stations to eat and ease tight muscles.

Finishing marked his longest race so far, and he says the challenge helped him understand what he is capable of.

He is considering a 100-kilometre race next, including the Alpenglow 100 in Valemount, British Columbia.
