Western Australian teen runs 660km to raise money for people facing homelessness
Lochlan Gilbert, a 16-year-old from Capel in Western Australia, ran 660 kilometres along the Gibb River Road in the state’s far north.
He completed the challenge in 14 days during his school holidays to raise money for people facing homelessness and to test himself.
The remote road is often travelled by four-wheel drives, and the nearest hospital was about 300 kilometres away.
Gilbert trained for two months and ran about 50 kilometres a day, starting at 4am to avoid the hottest part of the day.
His feet swelled with suspected stress fractures, and he suffered heat stroke on the first day, when temperatures were nearing 40 degrees Celsius.
He said thinking about people who have little choice in difficult living conditions helped him keep going.
A message from charity We Are Mobilise told him that reaching $15,000 had helped five families, which gave him further motivation.
The sources do not say how much he raised in total.
