São Paulo exhibition uses 100 photos to show lives of people living on the streets
An exhibition at Lacerdine art gallery in São Paulo presents 100 photographs of the work of priest Júlio Lancellotti and the Pastoral do Povo da Rua with people in vulnerable situations.
Four photographers made the images while accompanying Lancellotti, without staging the scenes.
The exhibition aims to help visitors see people living on the streets as individuals, with their own experiences and feelings.
Some photographs were taken during the Covid-19 pandemic, when many people sought to stay home while people living on the streets spent their days outdoors.
Lancellotti says he believes repression has dispersed people without addressing their needs.
The exhibition is open until November 18, and next month’s program includes talks and visits, some for people living on the streets.
Money from sales of the photographs will go to the Pastoral do Povo da Rua.

This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
We need a new grammar for looking at another person as a person, not as an object.
When we began talking about the exhibition, the question of an education of the eye arose: seeing people experiencing homelessness not just as a fact, but understanding their subjectivity—their search, suffering, joy, everything that is normally unseen.
A guided tour for the public is scheduled at the gallery for 5 p.m.
The program is set to continue with discussion groups involving Lancellotti and other visits and activities.
The exhibition is scheduled to end.
