Lega says autonomy reform should pass before any early election
Italy’s League party says a regional autonomy reform should be completed before any early general election.
The reform would give Veneto greater powers in four areas, under agreements approved by the region’s council on 3 September.
The agreements must now go to Italy’s government, which is due to approve final drafts by 30 October.
They would then be sent to both houses of Parliament, where each needs an absolute majority to pass.
The law sets no deadline for the parliamentary votes, and the Christmas break and budget process could slow them down.
If Parliament does not approve the bills before the legislature ends, they lapse and the process must start again.
The election date has not been decided; League leader Matteo Salvini favors voting at the end of the current term, in autumn.
