Turkey’s trade minister denies claims of a 170 million lira fund withdrawal
Turkey’s Trade Minister Ömer Bolat has denied claims that he withdrew 170 million lira from an investment account before investigations into investment funds began.
The government ordered investigations into seven portfolio management companies on September 16, and banks were assigned to wind down 131 funds linked to them.
Bolat said he invested 37.8 million lira of family savings in a sukuk account in February 2024 and did not withdraw from that investment.
Sukuk are investment certificates, and Bolat described them as an interest-free financial instrument.
He said there was no record of a 170 million lira withdrawal and challenged critics to find evidence of such a transaction in any Turkish bank.
The claims have become part of a political dispute while the fund investigations are still under way.
