Turkey’s social media restrictions for under-15s take effect November 1

Turkey has published rules that will stop social media platforms from serving children under 15, starting November 1, 2026.

Parliament adopted the law behind the rules in April.

Platforms must verify users’ ages, and the Turkish reports say verification can use a credential created through the e-Devlet service.

Existing accounts must be checked by March 31, 2027, and accounts found to belong to children under 15 will be closed.

Users aged 15 to 17 will face limits, including private accounts by default and no live streaming.

The rules also restrict features such as endless scrolling and personalized advertising for children.

The government says the measures are intended to protect young people from online risks including addiction, bullying and sleep loss.

Rights groups have raised concerns about restrictions on freedom of expression in Turkey, where social media accounts have recently been blocked.
