Five people held in Yahşihan municipality corruption inquiry

Authorities investigating alleged corruption at Yahşihan municipality in Kırıkkale province, Turkey, carried out a second operation on 8 October.

Nine people were arrested, and deputy mayor İbrahim Aydın was added to the case after being detained in a separate investigation over an alleged 100,000-lira bribe.

A court ordered five people jailed pending trial, including acting mayor Aydın Demirdirek and two deputy mayors.

The other two were municipal secretary Canan Demirkaya and Elif Biçer, the wife of a former municipal zoning director who was detained in the first wave of the inquiry.

The case follows a 24 September operation in which 35 people were detained and 16 were jailed.

The investigation concerns alleged corruption, and authorities have also reviewed financial analyses, expert assessments, property and vehicle records, and zoning files.

The five people ordered jailed were sent to prison; the inquiry is continuing.
